Chia seed
Chia seeds are tiny, black seeds that come from a flowering plant called Salvia hispanica, which is related to the mint family. Originating from Central and South America, chia seeds have gained popularity for their nutritional benefits and versatility in cooking.
To produce chia seeds, the plants are grown and harvested, and the seeds are then extracted from the flower clusters. The seeds are cleaned and dried before being packed and sold. Chia seeds have a mild, nutty flavour and can be eaten raw or added to various dishes.
Chia seeds are often seen on food labels as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and antioxidants. They are commonly used in smoothies, yoghurts, baked goods, salads, and puddings to boost nutritional value and add a crunchy texture. Chia seeds can also be mixed with liquid to form a gel-like consistency, making them a popular ingredient in vegan baking as an egg substitute.
