Cochineal
Cochineal is a food ingredient that comes from insects called cochineal bugs. These bugs are found on cacti in South America and Mexico. The red pigment used in food products is derived from these insects.
To make cochineal, the bugs are dried and crushed to extract the red colour. This colour, known as carmine, is then used in various food and cosmetic products to provide a red or pink hue. It is a natural alternative to artificial food dyes.
Cochineal appears on food labels as "carmine" or "E120." It is commonly used in beverages, yoghurts, candies, and baked goods to give them a vibrant red colour. Some examples include fruit juices, ice creams, and fruit-flavoured sweets. Cochineal is used for its ability to colour foods naturally without the use of synthetic dyes.
