Star anise

Star anise is a spice that comes from the fruit of a small tree native to China and Vietnam. It has a distinctive star shape with eight points, and its flavour is similar to black licorice, with a hint of sweetness. Star anise is commonly used in cooking and baking to add a warm and aromatic flavour to dishes.

The spice is harvested by drying the star-shaped fruits of the tree, which contain the seeds that hold the intense flavour. Once dried, star anise can be used whole or ground into a powder. It is often added to soups, stews, marinades, and desserts to enhance the taste and aroma of the dishes.

Star anise appears on food labels as a natural flavouring in a variety of products such as curries, sauces, teas, and baked goods. Its warm and sweet flavour makes it a popular ingredient in mulled wine, chai tea, and certain meat dishes like Chinese braised pork. In addition to enhancing the taste of foods, star anise is believed to have some health benefits, although it is mainly used for its flavouring properties in cooking.
