Whey powder

Whey powder is a food ingredient that comes from dairy products, particularly milk. It is a by-product of the cheese-making process, where the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained is dried to form a powder.

To make whey powder, the liquid whey is first pasteurised to kill any harmful bacteria. It is then dried through a process called spray drying, where the liquid is turned into a powder by spraying it into hot air. This removes the moisture and leaves behind the powdered form of whey that can be used in various food products.

Whey powder appears on food labels because it is a versatile ingredient that can enhance the flavour, texture, and nutritional content of foods. It is commonly found in protein shakes, protein bars, baked goods, and some dairy products like ice cream and yogurt. Whey powder is also used in soups, sauces, and dressings to improve their consistency and add a creamy texture.
