MAU stands for MrAnt Unit and was designed to be a representation of a food as a single number taking into account all the information found on a nutrition label and combined with an analysis of over 1000 typical foods.
Originally invented for a game to order foods by healthiness, the numbers were used by the community and as such remain in the app today.
