Cacao nib

Cacao nibs are small pieces of crushed cocoa beans that come from the cacao tree. This tree produces large colourful pods which contain the cocoa beans. Cacao nibs are the basis for all chocolate products.

To make cacao nibs, the cocoa beans are harvested, fermented, dried, roasted, and then cracked open to remove the outer shell, leaving behind the nibs. These nibs are then crushed into smaller pieces. The process is quite simple and natural, similar to making coffee beans into ground coffee.

On food labels, you may see cacao nibs listed as an ingredient in items like chocolate bars, granola bars, and trail mix. Cacao nibs add a rich, chocolatey flavour and a crunchy texture to these foods without the added sweetness or processing that comes with traditional chocolate. They also provide a natural source of antioxidants and nutrients, making them a popular choice for health-conscious consumers.
