Soy sauce

Soy sauce is a popular condiment that adds a rich and savoury flavour to dishes. It is a dark liquid made from soybeans, water, salt, and sometimes roasted grains. Soy sauce originates from Asia, particularly China, where it has been used for centuries in cooking.

To make soy sauce, soybeans are first cooked and then mixed with a special mould called koji that helps ferment the mixture. After fermentation, the liquid is pressed out, pasteurised, and aged to develop its deep flavour. The sauce can vary in taste and colour depending on the ingredients used and the length of the fermentation process.

Soy sauce is a common ingredient in various Asian dishes like stir-fries, marinades, dipping sauces, and soups. It is used to enhance the umami flavour in dishes and can be found in dishes like sushi, teriyaki chicken, and fried rice. When you see "soy sauce" on a food label, it signifies that the product may contain this condiment to improve its overall taste and add depth to the dish.
